Answer Engine Optimization, Explained

MUBy Muhammad Uzair·AI search·Last updated

Answer engine optimization — AEO — is optimising so your content becomes the direct answer a system gives, rather than one of ten links a user chooses between. As AI answer boxes have grown, so has the number of agencies offering it as a distinct service.

What answer engines are

Anything that returns a single answer instead of a list: Google's featured snippets and AI Overviews, voice assistants, ChatGPT, Perplexity. The user asks; the system answers; often no click happens at all.

What AEO actually involves

Is AEO different from SEO?

Less than the separate service category implies. Nearly everything above is standard good SEO — clear structure, direct answers, valid markup, crawlable content. The genuine differences are emphasis and expectation: AEO optimises for extraction rather than clicks, which means measuring visibility differently, because a good AEO result may produce no traffic at all.

That last point deserves weight. If a provider sells AEO on the promise of traffic growth, they may be selling the wrong metric for the thing they're doing.
